We were very lucky (again) with the weather which held for our street stall during the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

We handed out copies of the New European as well as general information about the effects of leaving the EU and information about the European Movement ‘Face the Music’ Campaign.

We had our usual ‘opinionometer’. We were very pleased with the very positive response from many passers by.

Several stopped to talk about the problems that they were facing as a result of the UK leaving the EU. There were a variety of themes that passers by wanted to talk about e.g.

  • someone from Northern Ireland who told us about the difficulties they was experiencing both getting goods into and out of Northern Ireland
  • a university lecturer who told us about problems with funding and much fewer opportunities for students to study in EU countries
  • someone who was worried about potential border controls between Spain and Gibraltar
  • a UK business owner who was relocating to the EU due to price increases and delays getting goods over the border
  • a UK citizen who told us about the satisfaction of acquiring an Irish passport

As well as these specific discussions there was a general venting of frustration, sadness and anger at what the UK is going through as a result of leaving the EU. We met several EU nationals living in the UK and who were very appreciative of our efforts.

Max Wilkinson, Cheltenham MP and pro-EU stalwart, also stopped to talk to us. We are very appreciative of his support.
